An exclusive interview with Dave Thomas, videographer and visionary of the award-winning All Set Creations. Why have so many All Set Creations wedding videos gone viral on YouTube with millions of views? Because it's not just videos. It's so much more!

What is your background in video production?
That's a long answer and it goes back probably further than your readers have been alive! The first videos I can remember were both hype videos for Notre Dame football and our High State Championship football team in the early 90's. Even though it took literally weeks to transfer clips from one VCR to another, it was rush from the satisfaction of our audience that got us hooked! That coupled with a love of movies led to majoring in Communications at Millersville University and on to a decade long career in TV News Broadcasting. In 2004, a new career in Broadcast education and the meeting my wife on the first day of that new career led us here. At the core of everything we create, both then and now, is a story and how the story elicits an emotional connection to an audience. When you combine that with cinematic experience where the people are now playing the primary roles in the film, you have a perfect recipe for award-winning movies every time we create something.

On your website you state your philosophy: "We Are Not Steering the Ship." How does this apply to your videography?
One of our favorite parts of our story is the name of the business itself. All SET creations has a faith-driven story behind it. In early fall of 2004, my wife and I were both single parents struggling to figure it all out. We lived many hours apart, obviously didn't know each other yet and we're both rediscovering our faith. Separately, we were both asking God to take us down the path we needed to be on, because we had struggled to do it without Him. October 18, 2004, at around 11:11am, we met each other and we instantly bonded. At first, it was through shared experiences as parents, but we quickly realized, we had become best friends too. We would often reflect on just how amazing our paths to our relationship were and would proclaim, "we're not steering the ship, He is." We got married in 2007, my wife's initials became S.E.T. and she said to me, "now I'm all set." Fast-forward to around the summer of 2015 or 2016 and our youngest daughter asked why the company we had built was named after our son Joey. Joey was our first child together. So, we agreed and we re-branded our company after that sweet expression my wife had made so many years ago, "now we are All Set." Many people think we are just using that common expression for, "you're good to go." But, as you can see, it's much deeper than that! As far as our videos and the people we have been blessed to work with, we just let Him steer that ship for us through our faith in His plan. When it comes to capturing and preserving special memories through Cinematography and Photography, He brings us the best people and we believe the right people. It's definitely gotten us this far, so who are we to question it?"

One thing very special about the videos you showcase online is that the weddings and other special occasions you film are so much more than just videos; it's like watching a Hollywood movie. How do you create this special movie magic?
Thanks for that compliment. This company is our family business, but is technically a "side business." Our primary roles are in education and all educators know that modeling is the best way to teach. It's also the best way to create. We've also been coaches along this journey and just like a great coach, we watch game films- our game films are movies. Think about it. Why do we laugh and cry when a movie wants us too? It's the blend of sound or sound design and the right pacing of edits combined with the shots, angles, and movements of cinematography that allow an audience to become immersed in the story! Now, translate that to our films and you got it. We break down movies, take notes or the subtle sounds and scores, then combine that with each clients personality and boom, you got it. We believe that both the filming and editing are equal creative arts and each couple, like ours, has a unique story. That's why each film we make feels different, but at the same time, feels like a mini movie!

What is the most inspiring wedding story you've been witness to while filming?
That impossible to answer :) By next year, we will have created 500 wedding films! So, there's not just one, but there are a few that come to mind. For starters, ever since we started offering destination wedding packages where we provide both videos and photos, it automatically creates something special. My wife and I travel to their destination and get to meet the entire family, go to the rehearsal events and stay all night at the wedding. That much time together really allows us to get to know the backstory and bones of a relationship — then, we do everything to recreate that love story. Recently, in Ireland, we had that exact experience and the film was filled with emotion. We also have to think back to the Pandemic. During the shutdown, we did many weddings in backyards and small spaces. We called them "part 1's" knowing that once it all subsided, there would be a "part 2." There were dozens of special moments when those "part 2's" happened and family members who hadn't seen each other in person or loved ones who were very sick and survived, were able to hug, kiss, and embrace each other again — capturing those moments were so genuine. However, the best and final way to answer this question may be to tell you the mindset of how we film. A mentor once said, in the context of news, that "the real story is not just what's in front of you, but mostly, what's around you." For example, it's easy to film a couple having their first dance, but when you look around, you see the priceless reactions of parents, grandparents, siblings, best friends, and others who have also been a part of that love story. We film all of that too. Unfortunately we know we are preserving memories forever and our films and photos will outlast the people in them. With that in mind, we always capture the subtleties; the hugs and kisses of grandparents, the looks of pride on a parents face, or the words of a speech with meaning and genuine love behind those words. We know that one day, those will be the moments that a person will play and look at again — just to see and hear that person again. It is an inspiration for us that we are trusted to provide something that can be cherished for generations.
