How did you come to be a toymaker?
Back in 2016 I regularly played Guild Wars 2, an online MMO. It was there where I met Elizabeth Burton (Pretty Polly), who not only helped me pick out my first sewing machine, but taught me the basics of sewing. We have a similar sense of humor, and I find her attention to detail inspiring. Despite her living in the UK and me being in Texas, she was the only person willing to teach me how to sew. I'd be practicing for HOURS just trying to make my own octopus plush, she would hear my sewing machine running, answering any questions I had along the way. She played an integral role in my career as a plush toymaker, and I can't thank her enough.
On average, long does crafting a plush animal take?
This can vary greatly on quite a few things such as size and design complexity, but I find most plushies being completed within a week or so. Some of the larger or more intricate projects may take longer.
What plush creation have you made that you take the most pride in?
There's quite a few plushies, but if I had to choose? Majora's Mask and the Moon. It's my favorite game of all time, so making such iconic designs from the game was extremely satisfying!
How would you advise an individual looking to get into crafting plush toys? Where would be a good place to start?
Hands on experience is the way to go in my opinion. Video tutorials and classes are a great resource, but getting a feel for how everything works is equally important. Don't be afraid of failure, you will make mistakes, but just like any other medium, it is part of your journey as an artist.
