What inspired you to create polymer dragons?
My business actually started out with me making custom pet sculptures. At the time I was incubating some chicken eggs and none of them hatched unfortunately. I opened them up to see at which stages they'd developed and got the idea to make something similar to what I saw but with mythical creatures. I've always been intrigued with the biology of animals and thought to myself, "my wouldn't it be remarkable to see a dragon develop from an egg". From that point my shop moved from pets to oddities.
The dragons have such a polished and realistic look to them! Please tell us a little bit about the process that goes into it.
My artwork starts out with a lot of research on whatever I'm building. I carefully study the development of animals such as birds and reptiles. The veins and eyes are the feature that sticks out to me the most in young creatures development. After I've sculpted my little guys and hardened my clay I paint them with watered-down acrylic for a transparent look and pick out the perfect jar for each one.
What other oddities and curiosities do you create/plan to create?
I've gotten requests from many people. My biggest challenge so far was a large 1-foot tall cerberus pup. The next request I think I'd like to work on is H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu. Another idea I've had is a facehugger or chest burster from the 1978 movie "Alien."
What is the most inspirational feedback you've received from a customer?
The most inspiring feedback I've gotten has to be all the individuals that think my art are real creatures. Hearing their comments about having to do double takes on my art, and trying to figure out what species I'm posting, really uplifts me. I hope to get even better as I go forward with my craft.
